36 Hour Live NYC Fundraiser 'Love For Haiti' this Thursday at Webster Hall

36 Hour Live NYC Fundraiser 'Love For Haiti' To Take Place At Webster Hall

NEW YORK, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti which has taken the lives of over 200,000 people, OneWorld Experience and Bluecrash Media will produce "Love For Haiti," a live 36 hour fundraiser on Thursday, January 28th at Webster Hall, a well-known entertainment venue in NYC.

A huge life-like projection (15 ft. high x 30 ft. wide) will be positioned on Webster Hall's exterior wall and it will showcase the live video of the fundraiser itself as well as a live Twitter feed. The video will be on USTREAM for all to observe. Anyone passing by the intersection of 3rd Ave. and 11th St. in NYC will also be able to witness this creative projection.

"By utilizing the power of technology and social media, the objective of "Love For Haiti" is to bring together the NYC and global community. Haiti desperately needs support and through this innovative fundraiser, we will bring them aid. We will become one for Haiti," stated Vanessa Kim, president of OneWorld Experience and co-producer of "Love for Haiti."

"Love For Haiti" will begin promptly at 5PM, Thursday, January 28th and end at 5AM, Sunday, January 31st EST. It will run live for 12 hours on these 3 consecutive nights from 5PM to 5AM.

The goal is to raise a minimum of $50,000 for Haiti. 100% of the proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders, which is made possible due to everyone volunteering their services and Webster Hall graciously donating its exterior space and marquee. Exclaims Gerard McNamee, Webster Hall's event curator, "Like everyone else, we were devastated to hear about the situation in Haiti. Webster Hall has therefore chosen to do this event for love."

A booth will be arranged in front of Webster Hall so the public can make donations in person. Donations can also be made online at Doctors Without Border's website www.doctorswithoutborders.org. A candlelight vigil will take place from 7 to 10PM each night.

"In this digital age, technology is the cornerstone of our lives. This is especially true for me considering the work I do. But people in Haiti do not even have the basic necessities like clean water, food and housing that we take for granted. By employing innovative technology as the marketing platform, we aim to bring a great amount of aid to Haiti," declared Morgan Freeman, co-producer of "Love for Haiti" and founder of Bluecrash Media.

Immensely popular electronic music artists, The Crystal Method, will be on stage at Webster Hall on Friday, January 29th and their performance will be featured in "Love For Haiti's" video stream. Additionally, a special presentation by one of our ultimate supporters, the Quarterly Art Soiree (www.theqas.com) will be showcased as well. Live conversations with celebrities and business leaders through Twitter and USTREAM is currently being arranged and once confirmed will be announced prior to the benefit.

GrubStreet: Cuban Sandwich Shop, Carteles, Opened Yesterday. Near 6th & 1st Ave

Carteles, the sandwich shop located on the ground floor of Ravi DeRossi's (Death & Co., Bourgeois Pig, Desnuda) two-story complex, Cienfuegos, quietly opened yesterday, and here’s your first look around. The menu (viewable below) includes a classic Cuban sandwich, a medianoche made with bread fried in sweet egg, a “Sloppy Joe” made with ropa vieja, and Bustelo coffee that’s pulled with sugar water and then given a pinch of salt. For now, Carteles will be open from 11 a.m. till 11 p.m., but designer Miguel Calvo tells us that once the upstairs rum lounge opens, it’ll serve till 1 a.m. As for that rum lounge, we had wondered whether Philip Ward of DeRossi’s Mayahuel would be involved, but we’re now told that Charlotte Voisey of the Eldridge and Rose Bar will be in charge of the menu.

NYTimes: Saints and Vikings Fans Share East Village 'Bar None'

Of all the gritty Manhattan taverns that exiled disciples of the New Orleans Saints would choose to make their own, why did they have to pick the very same East Village watering hole where displaced Minnesota Vikings fans had already staked a claim?

Sunday afternoon afforded plenty of time to chew on such ethnohistorical curiosities — and to wash them down with buckets of Abita beer, spicy bloody marys or a violet vodka concoction called Grape Ape — because kickoff in the National Football Conference title game between the Saints and Vikings wasn’t till 6:40 p.m.

At Bar None, the line outside on Third Avenue started forming long before noon.

NY Public Library: 'Where is St. Mark's Place?' - Everything you didn't know about the East Village street.

It is 8th Street, but from Third Avenue to Avenue A it is called St. Marks Place and is named for St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, which is not even on 8th Street, or St. Marks Place, but at the intersection of 10th Street, Second Avenue, and Stuyvesant Street. The land there has been a site of Christian worship since 1660. The history of St. Marks Place doesn’t go back that far, but a surprising amount of history has happened on these four blocks.

2 St. Marks Place was the location of the legendary jazz venue the Five Spot Café.

4 St. Marks Place was a home to James Fenimore Cooper in the 1830s.

8 St. Marks Place was the location of the first cooking school in the country, the New York Cooking School, founded in 1876 by Juliet Corson.

13 St. Marks Place was a home to Lenny Bruce.

23 St. Marks Place was where Andy Warhol started The Exploding Plastic Inevitable with The Velvet Underground in 1966.

30 St. Marks Place was home to Abbie Hoffman in 1967, when he cofounded the Yippie Movement and planned for the 1968 Democratic Convention.

33 St. Marks Place was the home of poet Anne Waldman from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s and in 1977 Manic Panic, the first U.S. boutique to sell punk rock attire, opened here.

51 St. Marks Place was the location of the gallery 51X which brought graffiti into the mainstream with artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

60 St. Marks Place was where Joan Mitchell had a studio from 1951 to 1957.

77 St. Marks Place was where Leon Trotsky worked on the dissident newspaper Novy Mir (The New World) in 1917.

80 St. Marks Place was the location of Theater 80 which saw the premiere of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown on March 12, 1967.

85 St. Marks Place was the birthplace of Lyonel Feininger, the painter and caricaturist, on July 17, 1871.

That’s just some of the history of this East Village street.

Eater NY: Conant Turning Cooper Square Hotel Bar into Casual Cafe

2010_01_coopfront.jpg

Yesterday, a look over at the Cooper Square Hotel revealed a minor but pertinent change in its glass facade. The downstairs bar, an area encased in glass to the left of the lobby, has been papered over. A query to the workers reveals it is being transformed into a casual cafe and should open in the next month. Looks like Conant is following the Carmellini and Danny Meyer mold, sticking a casual space next to his more formal dining room to attract the lunch crowd and the casual diners. It may also help to funnel customers into the tucked away restaurant space, which, at this point, has zero presence on the street.

Eater NY: East Village's Knife + Fork to help Haiti: '20% of every customers bill'

2010_01_haitihelp.jpgChef Damien Brassel of East Village restaurant Knife + Fork emailed in this morning to announce 20 percent of every customer's bill, including tip, will go to Haitian relief efforts on Wednesday, Jan. 20. And just half an hour later, Philippe Massoud, chef/owner of restaurant Ilili hit the inbox with his plea for restaurants in New York to band together for a Haitian benefit night.

Massoud proposes that restaurants across the city sign on to give 10 percent of restaurant proceeds and 5 percent of server gratuities to Haitian charities on Sunday, Jan. 24. And he is asking all restaurant PR firms to spread the word with their clients, concluding, "...in addition to fulfilling our duty as members of the human race, I believe that a joint effort by all restaurant PR firms will be most important in this endeavor." Stay tuned for more to see if this initiative takes off, or for the time being send money to these places.

ABCNews: Two people stabbed at East Village's Pyramid Club on Avenue A

Two people were stabbed inside a longtime East Village club that helped define the neighborhood scene.

Eyewitness News is told the victims were stabbed at the Pyramid Club on Avenue A just after 2:15 a.m. this morning.

They were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say no arrests were immediately made, but a knife was recovered on the sidewalk.

The club, which opened in 1979, helped define the East Village scene in its early years by hosting acts like Madonna and Blondie.

Bands like Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are believed to have played their first city concerts there.

It is housed in a four-story tenement building that a local preservation organization is pushing to be landmarked.

First Look at Balade, Now Serving Lebanese in the East Village

Watch the slideshow

Photo: Melissa Hom

Lebanese natives and childhood friends Roland Semaan and Joseph Said opened Balade this week, a Lebanese spot that makes its own pita bread for a take on pizza called, yes, "pitzas" and "sandweechet," wraps stuffed with marinated meats and spread with garlic aïoli. With housemade mezze like hummus, tabouleh, and baba ghanouj, plus platters of grilled meats, the small spot should give competition to similar, packed Middle Eastern neighbor Café Mogador. The atmosphere combines soft lighting and clunky wood tables with stone-toned exposed brick and tile walls. Plus, the owners scored beer and wine licenses to pour some Lebanese bottles, and an outdoor garden will open in the spring. Check out the menu below and then click through the slideshow to see the intimate space and some food.
