Curbed: East Villager Darren Aronofsky comments on 'Pioneering Spirit' and Brooklyn

BROOKLYN—Film director Darren Aronofsky made a comment at the Stoli Film Pioneer Awards that the only "pioneering spirit" he had growing up was to get out of Brooklyn. This got picked up by the press, and the opportunity proved too juicy for Brooklyn cheerleader Marty Markowitz to pass up. DNAInfo: 33-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot in the Face, near Ave D between 3rd & 4th Sts.

EAST VILLAGE — A 33-year-old man was fatally shot in the face in broad daylight Monday in front of a bodega in Alphabet City, police said.

Police discovered the man in the middle of the sidewalk on Avenue D, between East 3rd and East 4th streets, after a 911 call just after noon, police said.

AFP: East Village Rooftop Bee Farms return after 11-Year Ban

Andrew Cote uses the emergency fire ladder to climb up to the roof of his East Village building, where he tends to 250 bee hives.

Cote, a professor of Japanese literature doubles up as president of the New York City Beekeepers Association, and is happy that the city authorized beekeeping in mid-March after an 11-year ban.

"The city wants to plant one million trees, and the trees need to be pollinated," Cote told AFP

EAST VILLAGE (WPIX) - Thursday is a commuter gridlock nightmare with both President Obama and Vice President Biden coming to town.

President Barack Obama will make his financial overhaul speech today at Cooper Union on 7th Street between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue around noon. The President will arrive in New York around 11am. He will take a helicopter to Lower Manhattan, then motorcade up the FDR Drive to the Houston Street exit then make his way to Cooper Union.

Businessweek: East Village web startup, Foursquare, to reach 1 millionth user

On Apr. 21, Foursquare expected to sign up the millionth user of its location-based software, which lets fans check in at bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and train stations, competing for the free meals and other perks merchants dole out to virtual "mayors" in the game who frequent their establishments the most.

Foursquare takes advantage of the GPS chips inside smartphones to let users broadcast where they are and find out where other users are congregating. "I live in the East Village, which has so much rich history and so much to do, and I realized that I'd seen maybe 5% of it," Selvadurai says. "I was looking for a way to get my and friends to go out and do more things."
