Eater NY: Conant Turning Cooper Square Hotel Bar into Casual Cafe

2010_01_coopfront.jpg

Yesterday, a look over at the Cooper Square Hotel revealed a minor but pertinent change in its glass facade. The downstairs bar, an area encased in glass to the left of the lobby, has been papered over. A query to the workers reveals it is being transformed into a casual cafe and should open in the next month. Looks like Conant is following the Carmellini and Danny Meyer mold, sticking a casual space next to his more formal dining room to attract the lunch crowd and the casual diners. It may also help to funnel customers into the tucked away restaurant space, which, at this point, has zero presence on the street.
