Eater NY: Michael Bao's new DOB to Serve Vietnamese Brunch All Day

2010_02_DOB.jpg

EV Grieve notices that new signage has gone up on Michael Bao Huynh's latest, but by no means last, endeavor, the former Australian space on St. Marks Place. But what, one wonders, does dob stand for? Department of Buildings? Department of Bao? Dock of the Bao? Domination of Bao? Eater asked the serial restaurateur for some insight, and he reports it stands for Date of Birth. Those little ones between the letters represent his d.o.b., November 1 (see also: Bao 111). When the restaurant opens it will serve French Vietnamese fare with breakfast and brunch offered all day. There will be a dinner menu, a late night menu, and a $29 prix fixe. His friend and onetime business partner Pichet Ong is in charge of dessert.

EV Grieve: NYPost reports East Village Crime Stats fudged to Make Area Look Safer

From the Post today:

A city police captain was forced to retire last year after he fudged crime statistics to make his precinct look safer -- adding to widening concern over the accuracy of NYPD stats and the belief that top bosses pressure supervisors into cooking the books.

Capt. James Arniotes, a 23-year veteran, told The Post that he was busted for reclassifying 23 grand-larceny felonies as petit-larceny misdemeanors in early 2008.

The misconduct occurred while Arniotes, 48, was second in command at the Ninth Precinct in the East Village.

Grand larceny is one of seven major crimes, along with murder, rape, assault, robbery, burglary and grand larceny auto, that the NYPD and FBI track and publicize.

Village Voice: Shoolbred's Owner to Open Cajun Bar, 'Ninth Ward'; Food & Absinthe Cocktails

Robert Morgan, the owner of Shoolbred's, has one of the best absinthe collections in the city sitting on the back bar at his East Village tavern. He intends to feature an equally impressive selection at his new bar, Ninth Ward, opening in early spring.

"Everyone is doing classic cocktails," he says. "We do it here [at Shoolbred's], but we're not shoving it people's faces."

Morgan got approval in December to open Ninth Ward at 180 Second Avenue, across the street from his current bar, and construction is already underway. He says the new place will have an 1890s' New Orleans feel, with absinthe drips and classic cocktails, much like Laffite's or the Old Absinthe House on Bourbon Street.
